Dive into marine research in the Turks and Caicos Islands. On South Caicos, spectacular marine ecosystems are still largely untouched by tourism and development, and coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and mangroves flourish. Spend a semester among the island’s incredible marine life as you conduct field exercises to evaluate fisheries resources and policies and analyze the impacts of climate change on the island’s ecosystems. Finish the semester by designing an in-depth research project and collecting data—under the waves, on the docks, and in the community—to help the island residents balance their socioeconomic needs and conservation goals. Program Highlights
Swim, dive, or snorkel nearly every day – learn species identification and population assessment techniques while visiting coral reefs, sea grass beds, mangrove nurseries, and tiny, uninhabited cays.
Explore one of the Caribbean’s largest cave systems on a multi-day expedition to Middle and North Caicos, and then tour an old cotton plantation and learn indigenous histories of the islands.
Participate in coral restoration work firsthand; learn basic methods used to establish coral nurseries and work with local organizations to outplant coral to support reef regeneration.
Learn core skills, including coral health assessment, marine species identification, underwater transects and quadrats, natural resource valuation, research design, and data collection.
Earn your Open Water SCUBA certification during the first month of the program.
