Empowering...
June 03, 2025by: Aniston Bolinger - United StatesProgram: Volunteer in Childcare in Costa RicaThis was a great experience for me! I grew so much and I felt empowered! The program only requires you to volunteer for 5 hours a day so prepare for downtime! You will have plenty of time to explore the city/country and try lots of food before and after your volunteering. If you are going by yourself, there are a lot of others there also by themselves who would love company! I made some amazing friends! It is scary when you first get there before your orientation, but be brave! If you feel scared or have questions, ask the Local Team, they are very helpful and they want you to have a good experience. At my volunteer placement, there were frequently people from the Local Team in and out making sure I was doing okay. Expect the unexpected! The trip wasn't exactly what I pictured in my head, but it never is! Be ready to be flexible! Overall, it was great and I learned so much!
Great Volunteer Experience in Peru
May 31, 2025by: Nealie Cirino - United StatesProgram: Volunteer in Medicine in Peru - CuscoI recently embarked on my first medical/healthcare mission trip in Cusco, Peru. I am a registered nurse and my son is a pre-med student at college. Doing this journey together was not only a great bonding experience but it gave us a chance to visit another country and help people in need. From start to finish, IVHQ was a great company with which to deal. Everyone we had contact with was very accommodating, answered all of my questions, and frequently checked in before/during/after our trip. Our local team in Cusco was also fantastic—ensuring our volunteer positions were well explained and that our needs were met. I could not have been matched with a better host mom who went above and beyond to accommodate my many dietary restrictions! After completing our assignment each day, my son and I had time to explore Cusco and experience its culture—I even held an alpaca! If you are are thinking of doing any type of volunteer work, I highly recommend IVHQ—they offer a variety of different projects around the world!

I actually didn't start out looking for ways to either volunteer or to get abroad. It was while job searching my senior year of college when I was getting slightly depressed thinking about sitting at a desk in an office all day every day that on a whim I started looking up opportunities working with animals (my true passion). I came across a volunteer program that advertised saving baby sea turtles in Costa Rica. Having never been out of the country by myself before, but thinking it sounded like the perfect fix to my sudden onset of turning-into-an-adult-anxiety, I decided to go for it! My plan was to get it out of my system so that I could happily settle into my professional career once I got home. That completely backfired, obviously, and my trip only ignited a newfound burning need to continue to travel as much as I can!

What inspired you to travel abroad?
Sustainability is fundamentally about balance. It’s about behaving in ways that enable a diverse range of stakeholders to succeed and flourish in the long-term. There are many elements to sustainable volunteering, but some of the aspects for a volunteer to consider include how transparent an organization is in terms of how they identify the projects they support, especially in relation to projects that involve children, the extent to which volunteers will be trained and supported to work with local people in a responsible way, and the ability of an organization to demonstrate the long term impact that their projects have had on supporting genuine community or environmental needs.

It was the end of my HSC and I was bitten by the travel bug. Cambodia was a place theoretically close to my heart, but I had never been there. I empathized deeply with the extreme poverty and corruption that existed there. That is what ultimately pushed me to apply.
